GSD or DTM Files

A General Slave Data (GSD) file or Device Type Manager (DTM) file is provided by the manufacturer for each type of PROFIBUS device. These files contain crucial information about the device, including parameters such as baud rates, timing specifications, and available options like diagnostics and data lengths.

In Foxboro DCS, the GSD/DTM files facilitate the setup of communication with the slave devices. These files can be imported into the Foxboro DCS Control Editors, where they assist the device editor in selecting supported options and configuring operational parameters effectively.

The host FCP280 can establish up to 1,000 connections to I/O data accessed by each FBM222 over PROFIBUS-DP networks, with a minimum slave interval of 250 ms.

PROFIBUS-DP Communications

Interface:

Two communication channels provide interface to two galvanically isolated PROFIBUS-DP networks.

Bus Characteristics:

  • General: The FBM222 utilizes Electronic Industrial Association (EIA) RS-485 communications. The physical communication medium comprises twisted-pair shielded copper cable, ensuring reliable signal integrity.

  • Data Transfer Rate (Baud Rate): The baud rate is selectable, ranging from 9.6 to 12,000 kbit/sec (refer to Table 2 for specific configurations).

  • Maximum Allowable Bus Length: The maximum length of a PROFIBUS-DP bus segment is determined by the selected data transfer rate, ensuring optimal performance across varying distances.

  • Maximum Cable Length (FBM222 to TA): The cable length from the FBM222 to the Termination Assembly (TA) can reach up to 30 m (98 ft). This distance is not included in the overall bus segment length calculation.

  • Maximum Number of Devices on a Bus: According to EN 50170 standards, a non-expanded bus (without repeaters) supports one master (FBM222) and up to 31 slave devices. When using repeaters, the FBM222 can accommodate up to 125 devices per port, enhancing system scalability and flexibility.
